I decided to start sketching more or less daily to work on my W.i.t.c.h. style and in preparation for my next bigger project. I started with Hay Lin since she's my favorite character and will work my way through the girls one by one. I don't always fill an entire page a day so some of these sketches were done over several days. So this first one was a pretty long shot. I wanted to start drawing Hay Lin and test out a new hair style at the same time. Didn't work out so well. The profile was extremely tricky. Still got to work on that.

This is a good one. Got most of the faces right and tested out some specific expressions and angles. At least that's what I wanted. I ended up with 4 of them from more or less the same angle (#2,5,4 and 7) These were made over several days so I didn't start and sketch away.

Here I went with the hair style again I tested out in the last sketch page. I really like that on her so I'll be sticking with it for a while. Again some different angles though the views from the left (#2 and 4) are a bit more difficult than the ones from the right. Also I wasn't able to do a proper frontal portrait. Both #1 and 6 are kind of crappy. #2 looks a bit like Irma...

Here I tried working with her new hair cut but with different hair dues. So what would it look like if she'd make a ponytail or pig tails or whatever with her new hair cut? It was pretty experimental but it's okay how it turned out. #1 doesn't really look like Hay Lin and #3 is just... weird. #6 shows again my troubles with a view form the left.

These two kind of go together since they're on the same page and I think I drew them on the same day. The left one is one of my favorites. It's the first one showing more than just her face but for that it worked out nicely. With my new project I will be drawing the girls more in distress, bored or other negative emotions so I figured testing that out in advance might be a good idea. It's also a mood picture so it reflects my mood on that day. The left one was a random idea. I wanted to draw something funny and rather random. Started out with her face and added the coat and then thought about what situation she could be in. TADA! There goes the wind and the hat. The hat doesn't match her coat though.

Very experimental angle slightly from the top and a more or less dynamic pose. It's a mood picture again since I drew this on the first sunny and warm day of the year! I could actually sit outside on the floor of my balcony in the sun and sketch away with the grass right in fron to me and a cat passing by occasionally. Her face is a bit... off... kind of crooked but then again I wasn't going for perfection here I just felt like drawing and for that it turned out pretty nicely. The left arm was added later which explains why it looks kind of crappy compared to the rest but that's how it goes. That's why I'm doing this, right? So I get better. Anyways! Notice the hat? And where did we see that again? Oh right! In the former sketch! So yep that was kind of the inspiration. I made a drawing that'd match the hat. Okay I changed it a tiny bit so it's fit Hay Lin better. But the basic idea came from the previous sketch.

Random sketch. I wanted to draw the good old Hay Lin but couldn't decide exactly how and where and stuff. So I worked my way down and discovered that I couldn't remember her first guardian uniform! I think it comes close but it's funny that I've never drawn her in the first uniform. I guess I should do that more often. The arms are a bit... weird. I guess the rest is okay considering that I did this in the train with few elbow space.

Say hello to hipster Hay Lin! I suddenly felt the urge to draw the good old Hay Lin and remembered that one time when she wore these incredibly big sun glasses. So I drew her with some and added a unique Hay Lin-ish jacket. And then I wanted to draw some more and decided to use the sunglasses on my new Hay Lin design to see how that works out. I have to say it's less funny but it was cool drawing these two directly after each other.

As you can see, Hay Lin's a bit older. Her looks more the one of a girl of the age of 18-20ish. I hope I'll be able to adjust the other girls a bit in that direction too. So anyway. A somewhat fancy looking Hay Lin. The first try was a bit faulty... her face got a bit long and she doesn't look that much like Hay Lin. The second is better.

A super rough doodle of Joan Lin and Hay Lin as a child hanging up lanterns. Hay Lins pose is kind of ballet-ish. That's probably because I've been to see Shen Yun, an amazing show revolving the traditional chinese dance that resembles ballet in some ways. I might do some more sketches in that direction soon with flowy gowns and elegant poses... we'll see if I can get them right. It's not the best work and I always have trouble getting proportions right of children but for a really super fast rough sketch this is okay.

I started out making this wonderful woman HayLin but then I would have had to change a few things, make her look less stern and so on. So instead I made her resemble HayLin a bit. So maybe it's one of her ancestors? Who knows! I don't! Fancy gowns! ----- So! I was SO inspired by this and liked the drawing of yesterday so much that I sat down and drew Hay Lin after all. It's a bit cute sinec it almost looks like she kind' of snuck next to the chinese and stern royal for a picture or so and the princess looks at her... Say cheese!

Tada! Today's daily sketch. Since watching an older Sherlock Holmes series lately I had that image of Irma as victorian detective in my mind so today I sat down and started drawing. It's the first traditional drawing of Irma and I was super surprised how easily her proportions and face came to me! I've been practicing on Hay Lin for such a long time and still need to work out some issues and then BAM! Irma. Just like that! So yeah! Here's a victorian detective Irma for ya!

Been a while since I last posted something here so I thought I'd show a little about the things I've been scribbling about. As you can see, the first one's Orube. She's wearing some kind of new uniform with a fancy cape. Maybe her new outfit? And she's wounded. The second is the Breath of Time that I so very much like and the third is of cause one version of the Heart of Kandrakar. I made all three of these while sitting on the train. The border thingy at the bottom of Orube and the Breath of Time is the lid of my pocket calender. Yes, I actually still have a paper calender with me at all times. For cases such as this.

Todays sketch is to test the new outfits of the girls. The idea was to just draw a portrait of each girl but it ended up with Cornelia, HayLin and Taranee being at some kind of convention or event, presenting the new WiTCH comics at a table/booth. I really like how this one turned out so I want to finalise it. The question is if I'm going to do it traditionally or digital. The quality isn't so great since I took the pic with my phone but I guess you can kind of see the idea behind it. Oh and in the background are two random people unpacking and decorating the booth or rest of the room.

And Will and Irma are out handing out fliers and doing other things to get people to come to the booth! What a fun booth that'd be to go to!

Here are the others. They're posing for a foto. In the background is a big sign that's blinking and stuff and there are lots of skribbled people who wander about the place. So here we have Orube, Will, Elyon and Irma in their new Sovereign outfits. Also there are some cloths hanging from the ceiling off in the distance with the sign of the Oracle on it.

Some of it is a bit hard to make out. I can note the girls, and the Oracle. But not too well. And the one before I could barely note there was two people in the background. The pictures are kinda smallish.
But question though. When you look at the pictures yourself and see them not colored and their uniforms looking a bit like normalish clothes; how do you feel about them? Do you like the uniforms more now or less?

Yeah I know. I really need a scanner so I can scan them properly. But I do want to rework the sketches and make them into real pictures. Just not sure yet if I want to do it digital or traditional.... such a hard choice! Traditional would be fun but... I don't have a scanner!!! And digital is faster and looks more perfect afterwards because I can edit it until it does look perfect. While traditional is a bit more difficult. But it seems to wrong to not do it traditionally... aaaah!!!
Oh! It's snowing!!! OoO Okay so... back to your question. To me they don't look like normal clothing here. I don'T know, maybe because in my inner eye they are coloured and magical so I don't mind the lack or colour in the pictures? Something like that. To me this was a positive test that just said: Yes, these outfits work!
Not sure about Orube's and Elyon's yet. Those originate both from older sketches. I do like the different crown Elyon's wearing though it might be hard to use it without the fans stabbing me... Maybe it's her "looking like a queen without actually wearing the crown of light in public for safety reasons"-crown. I guess that could work.

Well I don't mean normalish-normal. I mean normalish as they look like they could be normal clothes, but don't lack the magical feel to them. I mean it very much like that one picture of W.I.T.C.H. They are wearing some slightly altered versions of their uniforms, but as normal clothes. You know the one I mean?
I've personally come to like Cornelia and Hay Lin's outfits more from their picture.

*sniff* You're comparing them to that?! Don't they look magical like the other uniforms of the girls? ... With swirls and... and detail stuff you wouldn't normally wear and... stuff?? *sniff*
I was the most interested in Taranee's and Will's outfit and hairdue, seeing them in an actual "WITCH" picture with the comic style and stuff. The design sheet I'm using does have other proportions and so on so I wanted to test them with their comic drawing style. I've come to really like those now. Especially with Will's I wasn't sure but I really like it here. Irma's is a little lacking though. I was so sure about it on the design sheet but now it seems a little uneventful compared to the others. Could be because of the way she's presented here, though.
I'll try out something else next. Maybe the moment where they first transformed into these outfits and are kind of looking themselves over. That could be a good moment to see if they work well.

I had always liked that picture. And the plush doll that Hay Lin had of, Hay Lin in her first guardian form. Although I always wondered why Irma had the Heart.
I had really like Irma's a lot too. But yeah, here it's not as good. That doesn't mean it's bad though just that it seems like maybe it's, lacking like you said. I do think it's perhaps because it's not full body with her. Fully body you see the whole outfit, here it's mostly just upper half. And in comparison the others seem like the upper halves of their outfits have more to them.
Perhaps. Although I don't think it's a matter of not working before. It's just when you see them in different kinds of settings it can give different views. Here it's not colored and their setting is some convention. Which is rather different then standing together in a pose.

Yeah you're probably right about the part with Irma not looking so fancy because she's not shown top to bottom. That was my impression, too so I want to find some way to draw her that way.
Not easy.

Would the plan still be to involve the convention setting or something new?

No I was thinking about the back of the first isse but also maybe some seperate picture of just Irma in her new outfit top to bottom. Just have to take the time to do it.
